Energy-hungry Americans contribute roughly 16% to global carbon dioxide emissions—making us largely responsible for the detriment these noxious greenhouse gases cause to the planet.

And according to a recent Mother Earth News article, a good chunk—21%—these CO2 emissions are the result of running household air-conditioning, lighting, appliances, and more. Sixty-eight percent of household emissions come from the consumption of electricity generated from burning coal at coal-fired power plants. The rest is largely generated by the burning of oil and natural gas.

It’s no secret that the release of noxious CO2 emissions into our atmosphere is a problem that needs to change. Thankfully, the solutions are right in front of us.
