Building homes in Florida comes with a responsibility that goes far beyond creating beautiful spaces. We build in a state where hurricanes, high winds, and wind-driven rain are realities of homeownership, and we believe the homes we build should be ready for them.
That’s why we’re excited to introduce LifeStyle StormSmart, a major step forward for resilient construction in Florida.
As announced last week, moving forward, all LifeStyle homes contracted after August 1, 2026, will be built to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) FORTIFIED Gold™ standard—the highest level of the FORTIFIED program.
And here’s what makes that commitment especially important: FORTIFIED Gold isn’t an upgrade at LifeStyle. It’s our new building standard.
What Is a FORTIFIED Home?
FORTIFIED is a voluntary, research-based construction program developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) to help homes better withstand severe weather.
Rather than focusing on a single feature or product, FORTIFIED looks at the home as a complete system.
It starts at the roof, one of a home’s most critical defenses during a hurricane. Enhanced roof-deck attachment, sealed roof decks, and strengthened roof edges are designed to help reduce the potential for wind and water damage.
But FORTIFIED Gold goes even further.
The program addresses other vulnerable areas of the home, including garage doors, windows and exterior doors, gable ends, porches, and other attached structures.
Instead of relying on individual components to withstand hurricane-force winds on their own, the goal is to make the home work together as one connected structure.
Independently Verified
FORTIFIED Gold offers homeowners another important benefit: third-party verification.
A FORTIFIED designation isn’t simply a builder saying a home was constructed to a higher standard.
Throughout construction, key building details are documented and verified by an independent, certified FORTIFIED evaluator. Final documentation is then reviewed as part of the FORTIFIED designation process.
That independent verification gives homeowners added confidence that the features behind the walls, beneath the roof, and throughout the structure were built according to the FORTIFIED requirements.
Even better, the resulting designation belongs to the property, providing documentation that can remain valuable if the home is later sold.
FORTIFIED Certification Can Help Lower Homeowner Insurance Costs
Building a more resilient home is valuable on its own, but a FORTIFIED designation may offer financial advantages as well.
Depending on the insurance carrier, location, policy, and available programs, homeowners with an active FORTIFIED designation may qualify for insurance discounts. Those potential savings can make resilient construction even more valuable over the life of the home.
(Insurance programs, eligibility, discounts, credits, and other benefits vary. Homeowners should consult their insurance professional regarding their specific policy and available savings.)
Built for Florida. Built for the Future.
We believe that home should be built from the very beginning with Florida’s weather in mind.
That’s what LifeStyle StormSmart is all about.
By making FORTIFIED Gold™ our new building standard, we’re giving LifeStyle homeowners something incredibly valuable: a stronger, more resilient home, independently verified construction, and greater confidence when the next storm approaches.
